Bug Evolution: How to Get Bigger and Know It Worked
Eat food to grow bigger and stronger in Bug Evolution, then confirm each level-up with the LEVEL UP! toast, the HUD LV counter and nearby creatures.
Quick answer
Eat food: Bug Evolution's official How to Play says to explore the world as a Spider, then eat food to grow bigger and stronger. Each level-up confirms the growth on screen — in one recorded session the LEVEL UP! toast read “Level 144 - you grew bigger!” while the LV counter in the bottom HUD ticked from 143 to 144.
- Watch for the LEVEL UP! toast: it says “Level [number] - you grew bigger!”
- Check the LV counter in the bottom HUD — it goes up at the same moment.
- Compare yourself with nearby creatures: one level 23 player was “bigger than a regular size sand scorpion.”

What makes your spider bigger
Eating is the game's stated growth step. Bug Evolution starts you as a tiny spider, and the official How to Play list says to explore the world as a Spider, then eat food to grow bigger and stronger — with evolving into powerful new Spiders, discovering new areas and becoming the strongest Spider listed after that. The food guide covers what you can eat, and the growth guide follows how meals turn into size and strength.
Recorded play shows the step working at very different levels. In one session a spider went from LV 143 to LV 154 while the player was eating and fighting, and the LEVEL UP! toasts appeared with no other input involved. The same loop runs early on, too: another player killed a sand scorpion, stopped to eat its dead body, and called out “I leveled up to level 21.” Later in that session, at level 23, they were “bigger than a regular size sand scorpion.” That session ran on a server where other players can attack you — the players note that others “could kill you,” and that you have to level up and get stronger than them — so size there is not just cosmetic.
How to tell it worked
Three things on screen tell you the eating paid off:
- The LEVEL UP! toast. It reads “Level 144 - you grew bigger!” and, at the next level, “Level 145 - you grew bigger!” The size change is stated in plain text.
- The LV counter. The number in the bottom HUD ticked from 143 to 144 at the same moment as the toast.
- Your size next to nearby creatures. Growth shows as a live comparison in the world — the level 23 player was bigger than a regular size sand scorpion after eating and fighting their way up.
When the toast pops and the counter climbs together, the game itself is confirming that your spider grew.
Growing bigger is not evolving
Level and species are separate labels on the HUD. In the recorded session the species label stayed TARANTULA from LV 143 all the way to LV 154 — the spider got bigger without becoming a different bug. Changing form is the How to Play list's next step (“Evolve into powerful new Spiders”), and it has gates of its own: the evolution requirements page covers what you need before you can evolve, and how to evolve faster works on the level and coin waits in between.
Keep the level-ups coming with quests
The quest panel on the right side of the HUD has QUICK, HOURLY and TRACKING tabs, with tasks like “Bite 14 Ants”, “Eat 17 Crickets” and “Stay alive for 7 minutes”. Finishing one shows “QUEST COMPLETE!” and pays coins — for example, +42 coins for “Bite 14 Ants” — and the panel then refreshes with new work; in the observed session it rolled over to “Eat 19 Beetles”.
Quests do not replace eating — they aim you at it. The eat tasks are literally meals, so completing “Eat 17 Crickets” means 17 more meals of growth on top of whatever else you find, plus the coin payout. If you are still finding your footing, what to do first as a new player and the progression guide place this loop inside the whole early game.
Trait prompts along the way
A level-up can also hand you a choice instead of just a toast. At LV 153, the recorded session showed a “LEVEL 153 - CHOOSE A TRAIT” screen with options like SKITTER (sprint costs -25% stamina, Health +4%) and THICK CARAPACE (Max Health +12%). In another session the prompt offered “Colossus, swiftness or vitality”, and a co-player pushed for Colossus because it adds health “and you're going to get bigger, too.”
Treat that size promise as one player's guess, not a game rule: the trait options shown in the recording list health and stamina effects, and none of them mention size. What the game does state outright is simpler — the level-ups themselves are what grow you, and the toast says so every time: “you grew bigger!”
