Bug Evolution: How to Level Up and Get Stronger

Raise your spider's level by eating food and killing enemies, confirm it with the LEVEL UP toast, and choose a trait bonus when a trait screen appears.

A view from Bug Evolution gameplay

Quick answer

Your spider gets stronger as its level rises, and its level rises from eating food and from killing and eating enemies. The LEVEL UP toast, the level counter and the XP bar confirm each gain, and a level-up can open a trait screen where you choose a bonus.

  • Kill an enemy, then eat the body: one player killed a sand scorpion, ate it, and went from level 19 to 21.
  • Watch the bottom HUD: the level counter, the XP bar, and health shown as current/max (3689/3689 in one session).
  • When a trait screen opens, it names your level and the choices - 'LEVEL 153 - CHOOSE A TRAIT' offered SKITTER and THICK CARAPACE.

What raises your spider's level

Bug Evolution's own HOW TO PLAY gives the core loop: explore the world as a Spider and eat food to grow bigger and stronger. Eating is the steady input, and fighting is the second one, because a kill turns the defeated enemy into food as well. In one early-level session, a player killed a sand scorpion, ate its dead body, and the level counter jumped from 19 to 21; by level 23 that spider was bigger than a regular sand scorpion. Players commenting on the game sum up why it matters the same way: you have to level up and get stronger than all the other players.

The same two inputs keep working at high level. In one late-game session, the counter moved from LV 143 to 144 through nothing but eating and fighting, then kept climbing to 145, 149 and 154. Both inputs feed the same place on screen: the XP bar in the bottom HUD, next to a segmented health bar that shows current and maximum health as numbers (3689/3689 in that session), beside the BITE, AUTO ATK and RUN buttons, with ability buttons such as SHOCKWAVE and HAIR BARRAGE alongside.

What you eat matters as much as how much, so the Bug Evolution food guide lists your options, and the growth guide explains how eating becomes size and strength.

Size follows level: at LV 23 one player was bigger than a regular sand scorpion.

Two clarifications keep those signals honest. First, leveling changes your level, not your species: the label stayed TARANTULA from LV 143 through LV 154, so a new spider form comes from evolving rather than from leveling - the evolution requirements guide lists what you need before you can evolve. Second, strength matters most when other players are around, because they can kill you; players commenting on the game put the payoff plainly: a bigger spider definitely has an advantage. For the size side of growing specifically, see how to get bigger and know it worked.

The trait screen: choosing your bonus

When a level-up opens a trait screen, you choose between bonuses instead of receiving a fixed reward. The screen captured during the Whispering Woods boss fight opened right after the 'THE EMPEROR SCORPION FELL!' banner, titled 'LEVEL 153 - CHOOSE A TRAIT'. The traits seen in gameplay so far:

Data table

Data table
TraitEffectWhere it appeared
SKITTERSprint costs 25% less stamina; Health +4%The 'LEVEL 153 - CHOOSE A TRAIT' screen after the Emperor Scorpion fell
THICK CARAPACEMax Health +12%The 'LEVEL 153 - CHOOSE A TRAIT' screen after the Emperor Scorpion fell
ColossusAdds health and also makes your spider biggerA trait choice in commentary, where it was the recommended health pick
Gluttony+10% experience for everything you eatA trait choice in commentary, rated good alongside a health option

The options come in rarities: players talking through a trait choice mentioned uncommon and rare options and described the green ones as rare. They framed the choice itself as a trade-off between health and size, health alone, or damage - their first option, Colossus, adds health but also makes the spider bigger.

Which bonus helps you get stronger depends on what is holding you back. If bigger creatures are killing you, health is the direct fix: THICK CARAPACE adds +12% max health, and SKITTER adds +4% on top of cheaper sprints. If levels feel slow, Gluttony adds 10% experience to everything you eat; the commentator weighing it against a health option called either pick good.

Quests and boss fights pay the same work

The QUEST panel on the right of the screen splits into QUICK, HOURLY and TRACKING tabs and lists objectives such as "Bite 14 Ants +42 (12/14)", "Eat 17 Crickets +56 (4/17)" and "Stay alive for 7 minutes +57 (2:41/7:00)". Finishing one shows a toast like "QUEST COMPLETE! Bite 14 Ants +42 coins", and the panel refreshes with a new objective. The biting and eating it asks for is the same work that raises your level, so glancing at the panel between fights turns progress you were making anyway into coin rewards.

Boss fights are the strong end of the same loop. In the Whispering Woods boss fight, killing the EMPEROR SCORPION produced the 'THE EMPEROR SCORPION FELL!' banner and rolled straight into the 'LEVEL 153 - CHOOSE A TRAIT' screen - a boss kill finishing as a new level and a fresh trait decision. The challenges guide covers these fights in detail.

Practical tips

Tips

Eat what you kill

The kill and the body are both progress: one player killed a sand scorpion, ate the dead body, and went from level 19 to 21.

Be careful with big prey

A big sand scorpion was called super hard to kill. Pick fights you can finish so you collect the body instead of becoming food.

Check the quest panel between fights

Objectives like biting ants and eating crickets track the work you are already doing, and each finished quest pays coins before the panel offers a new objective.

Match the trait to the problem

Getting killed points to health - THICK CARAPACE gives +12% max health and SKITTER adds +4%; slow levels point to Gluttony's +10% experience on everything you eat.

Leveling is the repeatable half of getting stronger, and evolving is the other. The progression guide puts both into the wider route after you hatch, and the fastest way to grow compares forms to target and the mutation to pick once you are planning past levels.
